Red Alert 2

Red Alert 2

Developer/Publisher: Westwood Studios / Electronic Arts
Released: 2000
Expansion sets: Yuri's Revenge

OVERVIEW

To learn about Red Alert 2 it's best to read the storyline of the game. Here it comes. Russian war for domination in Europe is over. As you've probably guessed the Russians have lost it. American government along with its allies imposed Russia a new leader - general Romanov. By many considered as a puppet of the USA Romanov turned out to be planning the restoration of the power of Russia. With the help of Yuri, a mad scientist, Russians developed secret weapons allowing mind control. Well, the rest is obvious. Russian armies launch an attack on America and its allies. This is the point where the game begins. You can lead to victory both sides of the conflict - and fight under the statue of Liberty as well as in sands of Sahara. There are two sides of a conflict but as many as 9 countries (USA, Germany, France, England, Korea - good guys, Russia, Iraq, Cuba, Libya - bad guys) - each country has a special unit. Of course each side has completely different units nad partially different structures. In comparison to Red Alert a great deal of things have changed. First - fantastic graphics, second - new perspective, third - completely new units, fourth - new income sources, and much more. See it yourself!

GAMEPLAY

If you choose single scenario you begin the game with several units: some infantry, perhaps a couple of tanks and a strange truck. That truck is a mobile construction yard - when deployed it enables erection of other buildings. To keep your buildings at work you have to provide power supply. In order to do that you have to build power plants. When out of power buildings stop working (for instance your radar device goes off). It is significant that power plants are probably the most fragile structures in the game. Anyway, your first assignment is to build a base. The most important structures apart from contruction yard and power plants are: barracks (for recruiting infantry), war factory (for vehicles) and ore rafinery Cheap AirTickets
(for collecting precious ore and therefore making income). The one and only natural resource is ore - which is sold at ore rafineries, and the money is then used for erecting structures and creating new units. In some scenarios you can, however, encounter oil wells, that become additional source of income when captured. Goal of the game is to defeat the enemy. In general common strategy looks like that: build base, get money, build a strike force, and finally find and destroy hostile base. Where's the fun, you say? It's all about the units and tactics. Moreover both sides have special weapons like weather control, mind control, nuclear devices etc. Incredible graphics - that's also an advantage. A hell of a game for the rts fans!

STRATEGY AND TIPS

  • follow this simple initial building order: construction yard - power plant - ore rafinery - barracks - power plant - ore rafinery - war factory; it's the safest option;
  • if possible send your infantry to nearby buildings; your GIs (or conscripts) don't suffer from enemy fire while inside;
  • occupy and defend oil wells - precious source of income; you can run out of ore but can't run out of oil;
  • remember that power plants and oil wells are extremely fragile;
  • your one and only defense from spies are attack dogs;
  • don't go for enemy base in the beginning; if you turned off "special weapons" option you should be attacked by AI player soon; if you resist that first strike you should win easily;
  • your strategical structures should have anti-aircraft defense;
if you command allied forces:
  • use your rocketeers to eliminate enemy infantry; (but be careful for the guys with flak cannons);
  • prism tanks; they are effective against infantry and light vehicles;
  • you have to face the fact that the Russians have better tanks; build prism towers to defend your base and some tanks for backup;
  • your GIs can deploy (put sandboxes around them and take out heavy gun :));
  • if you notice some Kirov airships heading for your base, take them off as quickly as you can; they are slowly but make serious damage and are hard to destroy;
if you command soviet forces:
  • every group of soldiers should contain guys with flak cannons;
  • your main advantage over Allies is your "armoured fist", that is tanks; use them wisely;
  • tesla troopers also can do some good work;
  • as far as sea is concerned your main force are submarines;
  • try sending some Kirov airships to the enemy base - you will be delighted by the effects;
